Holding Out release “Angler” (single)

HOLDING OUT
SINGLE: ANGLER
RELEASE: 14.04.23

Hailing from Newcastle, Holding Out were originally formed in 2016. Since 2019, the current members have created a large catalogue of music which demonstrates juxtaposing harsh riff-driven punk against melancholic emo revivalism. In their local music scene, the band is known for delivering a frantic and energetic live shows.

Holding Out are just about to release their new and first single of the 2023 entitled “Angler” on 14th April. The song starts with a dark mood, but the rhyme section creates an enchanting pop beat and somehow it makes the song uplifting. The main part of the vocal begins with a slower pace to make you acknowledge that is a story teller. In the second part of the vocals, the high tone backing vocal joins in. It shows you how their two vocalists work well together. Then the tempo becomes faster and the higher vocal takes the lead with the falsetto which is very effective. This is gradually taken over by a little more aggressive hardcore punk style. I would say that is their signature vocal style. Finally they explode with the repeat of the last line “Casting out our lines till they’re ready to take us”. Their energy level are at maximum. I feel this is a perfect song for their live show.

I must say that the sound of this song is .very refreshing. Probably their 2019 release “Florida Man” is the closest sound, otherwise there is nothing like this song that they have written and recorded. I was pleasantly surprised. Holding Out express their vocal ability and songwriting capability in “Angler”.

According to the band, there are more releases following “Angler” this year. I am looking forward to it more than ever. They are self producing each song they release. Holding Out takes ownership of the narratives they weave into their music, covering subjects ranging from work burn-out to the volatile nature of the tabloid press and performative activism.

“Angler” (Lyrics)

Here’s a lead weight,
There’s the ocean,
The next movement you make
Could tear a heart open.
A choir of birds around the edge,
Waiting to take you.

I could’ve sworn I heard them, scheming to themselves,
Rationing the parts so they could keep feeding.
Dip your toes into the edge of the earth,
Boy you’re not the only one that’s bleeding.

Here’s the cliff edge,
Rocks laying down below,
Please just mind your step,
Its a long way down to go.
How these rubber boots and fishing poles dive in,
Waiting for the crack of dawn to congregate oh I..

I could’ve sworn I heard them, scheming to themselves,
Rationing the parts so they could keep feeding.
Dip your toes into the edge of the earth,
Boy you’re not the only one that’s bleeding.

Waiting for the tide to
Come and take us whole,
The tip of my toes,
the back of my throat.
Collapse these brittle walls we built
Around our home,
Crashing down.
Its over

Casting out our lines till they’re ready to take us,
Casting out our lines till they’re ready to take us,
Casting out our lines till they’re ready to take us,
Casting out our lines till they’re ready to take us,
Casting out our lines till they’re ready to take us,
Casting out our lines till they’re ready to take us,
Casting out our lines till they’re ready to take us,
Casting out our lines till they’re ready to take us.
