TIRADE

Artist: TIRADE
EP: TIRADE
Release Date: 25 November 2016

Marcus Halsey

If you want a band that really puts the Alternative in Alt Rock, then you need look no further than TIRADE. The Manchester based quartet effortlessly fuse a range of styles including Pop Punk and British Rock into fast paced, generally light hearted, feel good tunes.

Having had their first single ‘Snakes and Social Ladders’ from their forthcoming EP championed earlier this year by Alex Baker on his Kerrang Radio Fresh Blood Show. The band are set to release their self-titled EP on the 25th November. Overflowing with huge riffs, intricately structured rhythms and memorable lyrics the whole EP will have you hooked from start to finish.

Opening with the aforementioned ‘Snakes and Social Ladders’ this punky track features gutsy drop tuned guitar riffs, engaging drums and sing-along lyrics. Then you’re treated to ‘Punch?’ reminiscent of bands like Sum 41 this short punchy tack has great syncopated complex rhythms, dancing guitars amusing lyrics.

The beat slows slightly for ‘Knives In Your Eyes’ another interestingly paced track with a rebellious edge. Track four is the aptly named ‘We’re Having Fun’ definitely a catchy tune that is bound to get stuck in your head. The band’s video that accompanies the track is just what I expect for such a song, so did not disappoint.

‘Travel Agent for Guilt Trips’ is a veritable soundscape that rushes straight at you from the beginning with frantic drums, rich guitars and layered vocals. With plenty of “woahoowoah” in the chorus it’s a real crowd pleaser if ever I heard one. Track six ‘Optimism’ has a more serious melancholic theme, but it is actually my personal favourite track on the EP. With great lyrics, dynamic vocals and screaming guitars a plenty you can’t help but sing along.

The final offering is ‘The World Isn’t On Your Side’ that starts out like a typical Pop Punk offering with layered vocals but the drop tuned guitar breaks remind me of Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! “ez core” style. Like the other songs on the EP it’s an instant earworm that will undoubtedly end up on repeat.

With such high standards throughout and each track being so memorable I feel like I have just listened to a whole album not an EP. I think TIRADE are pretty special and definitely a band to watch out for in the coming months.

Recently I had a chance to interview TIRADE. Here it is;

Hello, TIRADE! Thrilled to have you with us today!
I’ve known TIRADE since day one…? But, would you mind introducing yourselves?
Your names and your roles in the band…

We have Jake Tilley, lead vocals and on bass guitar, Josh Pearl on guitar and backing vocals, Alex Young on guitar and backing vocals, then Stevo Somerset on drums.

Thank you. You were all away from home and met in Manchester, am I right? Could you tell us how you all met up and became a band?

We were all studying at Manchester Metropolitan on the Crewe Campus, there isn’t much to do in Crewe at all. So we thought rather than being bored, we’d start up a band so we had a reason to get as far away as possible playing shows!

That is a really good reason! I believe what you use for the band image is a shark’s mouth, or shark teeth I should say. What does it mean to you?

It harks to our debut EP, the artwork has a shark on the front swimming through sea-mines, the mines were all the bad people and bad things that happen during life…and we are the shark, swimming through it and just carrying on!

So we took that idea for our logo and artwork ideas. Also sharks eat people, and so do we in our spare time…

Haha! Well, who are your influences? Does everyone listen to similar music?

We don’t all necessarily listen to the same music, no. We’ve all come from very different musical backgrounds from when we were younger, but we all have a mutual love for riffs, interesting timings, catchy choruses and tasty tunes, and then share love for a few of the same bands!

Great! How do you go about writing your songs?

Josh or Alex generally come up with a riff or an idea, and then we all work on it and record it into our computers. Once we have a full structure we head into the rehearsal space and try it as a full-band, and then pick and choose and change parts that do and don’t work!

Okay. Who writes the lyrics?

Jake is the main lyric writer, but comes to us for our opinions on certain areas and songs that relate to all of us.

Are the lyrics written from your own experiences?

Very much so, if you listen to this whole EP, you’ll have pretty much heard about our whole year in about 25 minutes!

That’s awesome for fans. How would you describe your new single “We’re Having Fun”?

Fast-paced and gritty, it’s got a lot of meaning behind it and a lot of middle fingers being sent out to certain people! Lots of riffs, lots of harmonies, a bit of shouting in the angry bit, but a lot of fun!

Thanks, that’s great! So your second EP is going to be released later this month. You must be very excited! How are you feeling about the new release?

So excited! But also stressed, worried, anxious, like all musicians get about an upcoming release, we are hoping that people will enjoy it as much as we do!

They will enjoy it for sure like I do! Could you tell us how you decided the new EP to be self-titled?

We were in the studio recording the EP at the time. We had a few names that we had thought of, so we took them to our producer Neil Kennedy, he sort of shone a light on the situation and we realised we were forcing an EP name.

We realised that the EP was as natural as our sound could be, it’s just TIRADE, so…we called our EP ‘TIRADE’!

I see. Could you tell us about the new EP?

It has a little bit of all of our influences in it. The EP is heavy, fast, slow, emotional and extremely real, we hope that people will be able to relate to the lyrics because they are all based on real situations that we have been in during the year, …love-loss, death, liars, touring, fake-friends… lots of fun and happy stuff! A couple of the songs are emotional, but we put our own optimistic and upbeat sound on the rest of them!

Fantastic! I hear you have a special EP release show soon.

Yeah, we are really excited for it!

We are having the show in Manchester’s Northern Quarter at AATMA, we’ve got some really cool local bands supporting us, tickets are available on our Facebook page’s events tab!

You have been on a few tours this year. What was like to be on tour?

We love being on tour! I think it really shows whether or not you and your band mates are friends. We had so much fun travelling around, visiting countries in the UK that some of us had never been to!

Our first tour with One Last Run and Near Moments was amazing, and we can’t thank them enough for taking us with them. Our second tour with We Are Carnivores was just as good, we finished that tour with friends for life, we love you WAC♡

Awww nice! Do you have a plan for another tour soon?

There may be some news coming soon in regard to touring!

Is there anything you would like to say?

Thanks for having us and for your constant support, Music Matters is so helpful and necessary for upcoming bands!

Thank you! And good luck!
