Flatlands – Friday Night

Artist: Flatlands
New Single: Friday Night

Release Date: 17th November 2017

Hailing from Oxford, a fresh-faced quartet Flatlands debuted their first studio-recorded songs on their EP ‘Provisional Licence’ in January 2017. ‘Friday Night’ is their first single since the EP.  They have always created their music with a slight punk flavoured alternative rock  sound. This new single begins with appealing punk vibes which is a lot stronger than their previous songs. Having said that, overall ‘Friday Night’ is not typical punk music. It is foot-tapping indie-rock with energy, and I shouldn’t forget to mention that the band have crafted the song with fantastic harmonies. They have definitely raised the bar.

Friday Night (Official Lyric Video)

Recently we asked the band some questions for the occasion of releasing a new single. You can find out about Flatlands a little more.

Hi guys! First of all, could you introduce yourselves?

Hello and thank you! We’re stoked you could have us. We’re called Flatlands, but outside of the band people usually call us Tom, Nat, Jamie and Rob.

Great to have you today! How did you all meet up and become a band?

We all went to the same school and had been in different bands and ensembles. As three of us geared up to leave school we came together and decided to form a new band, which is the one we’re still in today.

Okay. How did you decide on Flatlands as your band name?

Flatlands came to Tom as he was inter-railing with his ex-band member in Germany. They were going their separate ways after school, both locationally but also in music taste. Tom wasn’t ready to stop playing in a band, though. As such, the idea for a new band with a stronger focus on rock was formed as he was travelling through some literal Germanic flatlands. Neat-o.

I see. Who are your influences? Does everyone listen to similar music?

We like to listen to both Indiepunk/emo style music, inspired by the likes of Modern Baseball, The Front Bottoms and Brand New, as well as more modern indie rock songs from the likes of Foals and Radiohead.

How do you normally go about writing your songs?

Tom or Nat will usually come up with a riff/chord progression/melody which we’ll usually record on our phones and send to our group chat. If we like it we’ll jam them in the next rehearsal. Tom usually writes the lyrics with a cup of coffee in one hand and a lo-fi hip hop radio station playing quietly in the background.

You have just released your new single “Friday Night”. I’m so excited about the release! You must have been very excited too!

Yeah, we have been gigging this song for quite a few months, and we’re so happy we can finally release it for everyone else to hear!

How would you describe your new song “Friday Night”?

Imagine if a sweaty London gig, and had one too many beers and started singing karaoke.

Right, I thought it would be something like that! I believe the song was released digitally. Where can we find it?

All your favourite music and streaming platforms, but there’s a lyric video on YouTube that we worked really hard on, so be sure to check that out!

Thank you! And I’m sure they will do. It feels like a long time since you released “One Major One Minor”. How have you been?

Really, really good actually. The video has actually got over 13,000 views on YouTube now. We never thought so many people would find our music! We’ve also played a number of festivals and notable support slots for the likes of Marsicans and Yonaka. It’s been such an awesome 2017.

Great to hear it, guys! Will this single be followed by an EP or album?

We can’t say too much right now, but exciting things are coming.

That sounds good to me! Do you have any gigs already planned?

We’re currently undergoing a bit of an overhaul and rebrand, so that we can dive into 2018 with a bang. More on that to come.

Awesome! Is there anything else you would like to say?

Bring guitar sliders back!

Thank you for your time! Good luck!
