I find it hard to pigeon hole From The Cave and I suppose that is one of their appeals to me. This London based 5 piece alternative rock band however do have a distinctive sound with layers of harmonised vocals, clean guitars and keyboards combined a lyrical style that is poignant without being convoluted but always contagious.
Having been instantly hooked by From The Cave when they released their self titled debut EP last April, reviewed by yours truly right here, I have been eagerly awaiting some new material and the wait is finally over. (Click here to read the EP review: From The Cave – EP Release)
‘Same Game’ has an infectious groove that draws you in from the start. Once again From The Cave have crafted some catchy lyrics that will have you singing along in no time, which is something I just love that about the band. When the song slows it becomes quite moody with an anxious feel and we are treated to the amazing vocal range of Mikaela. Then the tempo picks up and the insecurity turns to defiance helped by some fantastic drumming.
Just like their other tracks the production level and musical maturity, for such a young band, is top notch and really shows the passion all the members have for their craft.
The band have also recorded a great music video to accompany the track that can be seen right here. You should definitely check it out. It would not look out of place as a trailer for a dance film with a male protagonist who works in a cafe by day but dreams of one day becoming a dancer.
So now I wait patiently at the entrance to see what else emerges From The Cave. I just know that when it appears it’s sure to be another gem.

With very short notice, the band kindly took some time out of their busy schedule to be interviewed by me. Here it is;
Hello, From The Cave! First of all, can you introduce yourselves?
Hey! We have Kristian on vocals and guitar, Mikaela on vocals, keys and percussion, Josh on guitar and vocals, Johan on bass and Anton on Drums.
Thank you. I’m guessing, you have all met at Uni. Could you tell us a little more how you met up and became a band?
That’s right, we all met at music uni. From The Cave actually started as more of a solo project, with Kristian songwriting, singing and recording his own material. He began looking for some band members to start gigging the songs and we first got together through mutual friends and Kristian advertising for musicians.
However, soon after playing together, it was clear this was going to be more of a band venture, as we really started to develop our own sound through re-arranging and jamming the tunes. Also, it helped that we became great friends, haha
Awesome! How did you decide on From The Cave as your band name?
Boring answer, the name came from all of the first songs being written in the basement of Kristian’s house.
Less-boring answer, it just sounds RAD!!!
Haha great!
Who are your influences? Does everyone listen to similar music and bands?
Though we all share a love for indie/alt rock music, as individuals we have a very wide range of different influences. Sometimes, you can hear snippets of our individual tastes in our songs, such as funk, jazz, flamenco and EDM! Sounds pretty random, haha.
But overall, as a band, we take inspiration from artists such as Coldplay, Arctic Monkeys, U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Arcade Fire and whatever else we can get our hands on!
Okay. Well, how do you go about writing your songs?
Though the EP songs were mostly pre-written, since then we’ve written in pretty much every way possible! Some songs come completely from jams, sometimes someone will bring an idea to everyone else and we’ll jam, sometimes we’ll co-write and then jam and sometimes someone will bring an almost complete song. And we’ll…….JAM!
Short answer, a lot of jamming!!!
Sounds perfect! Now, you are just about to release your new single “Same Game”. You must be excited!
Yes! It’s the first song we properly wrote together and so we’ve lived with the song for around a year and a half! Excited to see it finally getting released.
Your baby is just about to start the journey! How do you describe the song?
There’s two sides to Same Game. On one side, it’s fun, funky, dance-able and has some comedic lyrics. There’s a dark side as well, that’s about…..well, we’ll let you figure out what it’s about instead!
Alright. You can read our review! The music video is coming very soon. How did the idea about the video come up?
We wanted to make this release a special one, so we teamed up with award-winning, Barcelona film director Javier Chacartegui, whom also happens to be Kristian’s cousin! and created a Kickstarter campaign to raise money for the video. Amazingly, we raised £800! Thanks to our beautiful fans, friends and families!
The idea from the video, came out of meetings between Javier and the band and we had the idea of starring our friend, American actor/artist/force of nature Dezmond Meeks.
We loved the idea of making a video with a story, and one that had parallels with both our and Dezmond’s real lives, as musicians in London.
Nice. Thank you for sharing your story. Will the single be released as a digital download?
Yes, soon it will be available everywhere!
Am I right to say that the second EP will be following the single “Same Game”?
We’re currently in the studio recording new material at the moment. We have many songs that we’re looking forward to release in the future……
Could you tell us about your next EP a little?
We haven’t announced any EP plans so far, however, we are currently recording new material.
Do you have any shows already planned?
We are arranging a big gig for the 4th March. Be sure to follow us on Facebook and look out for more details.
Smashing! Is there anything you would like to say?
This is gonna be an exciting year! Loads of cool stuff coming up for us and we’re looking forward to sharing it with you, so don’t forget to stay tuned on all our social media things!
Thank you for your time, and good luck!
Thank you for all your support!
