Artist: Delights
New EP: Delights
Release Date: 24th September 2017
A couple of weeks ago, I came across Delights, a new indie rock band based in Manchester. The young band have just released their 4-track debut EP, which was self recorded, produced and released from start to finish. Listen to the tunes! Also you can read the interview we just did below this page.
Delights EP
[Tracklisting]
1. Bloom (EP Version)
2. Better Place
3. Cascade
4. Lust
The first track “Bloom” is the band’s first single, and they released the official music video that seems to be a rather sweet DIY production. It is current and the quartet perform authentically with confidence. The second track “Better Place” and the third track “Cascade” are quite delicate, and they bring on some sentimental modes. Though they are still foot-tapping and can be singalong songs at their live shows. “Cascade” is particularly well crafted. The fourth and the final track is “Lust”, a song in which you can feel their energy more than in other songs. The lyrics are not happy ones, but it’s an uplifting song. This is definitely my favourite track.
They are the youngest band that Music Matters have featured here. In all genres, Manchester is very strong, and is always producing quantity musicians/bands. Delights are made of four 17 year-old musicians, who show a maturity and talent in their music first time round. I am sure there is a lot more to come from this promising young band and I already can’t wait to hear what they will bring next.
Delights are:
Ben Squires – lead guitar
Adam Maxwell – vocals and rhythm guitar
Ben Kirkland – backing vocals and bass
Leo Willis – drums
With very, very short notice, the band kindly took some time out of their busy schedule to be interviewed by me, Teri Morris. Here it is;
You must be excited about releasing your debut EP. How are you feeling about it now?
We’re feeling great about it to be honest, it’s nice to have something out there for people to listen to. We’ve been pretty surprised at how well the EP has been received so far.
Fantastic! About the lyrics, how important is it to you? Do you write from your own experiences or something just comes up in your mind?
Yeah the lyrics are written from personal experiences that mean a lot to us as a band and we hope they can be relatable to others too.
I think they do. Could tell us about the journey of making the EP?
We wrote all the songs earlier in the year, and we recorded and produced all of the songs ourselves. Most of the parts were recorded in Leo’s shed which also doubles up as our practice room.
Great job! You guys are lucky that Leo had a decent shed! Do you have a favourite track of the EP? And why?
I think we all like ‘Cascade’ the most as it’s the most well produced and well thought out song on the EP. The lyrics mean a lot to us and I think that comes through in the song.
Could you tell us how you all met up and became a band?
Leo, Adam and Ben Squires met in high school and we had all been involved in music in some shape or form, and Adam, Ben and Ben were in a band for a number of years where Leo was the number one fan in the crowd at every gig. Then when it came to forming Delights, we encouraged Leo to learn the drums and got him out of the crowd and onto the stage.
Nice! Who are your influences? Does everyone in the band listen to similar music?
We all like old school indie music, like the Roses and the Smiths, but we’ve all got our own individual preferences which helps a lot in song writing as we all have different ideas which come together.
How did you decide on Delights as your band name?
We were on the bus on the way home trying to think of a band name, and Leo suggested “the lights” looking out the window at the street lights. Ben misheard him as saying “delights” and we all liked the name and it’s stuck since really, it’s not the most interesting band name story but it’s how it happened.
Either would be good, but Delights sounds different! Well, I heard that you have a show on 15th October. Can you tell us about it?
Yeah! we’re playing Sound Control in Manchester supporting Black Pulp for the launch of our friend’s label, Churchface Records.
Great! What should we expect from your show?
A couple of new tunes, energy, and hopefully a lively crowd.
Hope you enjoy playing there! Is there anything else you would like to say?
Yeah keep an eye out for some more gigs tba soon!
Thank you for your time! And good luck!
Nice one!

Well, aren’t they too adorable! Their moniker certainly fits, because they have a delightfully infectious sound. Nice feature!
