A debut single the envy of most bands, SPOILER announce their arrival vehemently. The band hails from Essex and brought a flair for the down-tuned darker tone of Hardcore and Beatdown metal. One single is not enough to define a band’s style but with Repress, they have surely given us a taste of what to expect.
Repress is filled with fascinating sounds, each one further etching the name SPOILER in our minds. From screeching pitches on piercing frequencies to forlorn ambient dissonance, the song has is all.
The vocals are magnificent. Low gutturals are the foundation with variations depending on the tempo of the part. While expertly executed, it is how well it slots into the mix that caught my ear. It is intense yet not exacerbated and creates a great tone on breakdowns and groove sections that bodes well for the longevity of the song.
The breakdowns, in particular, are epic and create vacuums of energy on the verge of explosion, and they are ingeniously transitioned back into the backbone rhythms of the song, with drum fills or just pure darkness.
The outro leads in with exhausted grunts hurling into a hectic beatdown rhythm, with an eerie, downright creepy, melody filling it out. It is just beautiful.
Everything is done right to make Repress a banger of a Dethcore single, and I really hope a ton of people discover this song and fall in love as I did. But I can’t help but feel like there is more SPOILER has yet to show us.
