Dead Reynolds

Hailing from the Eastern Counties, UK based alt-rock quintet Dead Reynolds have just completed their first headline tour, in support of their debut single “Dust”. The London date I attended was the right in the middle of their tour.

The night kicked off with two solid London-based acts. First of all, an alt-folk/punk singer Katie MF appeared on stage. She sung her songs with attitude and with one of the most authentic voices you would expect to hear from solo performers today, and produced a fantastic acoustic guitar sound. Talking between the songs made the audiences laugh and she definitely made the venue in the cold night feel warmer.

The following act was Dishy Tangent, a unique, smiling quintet. They don’t categorise their sound, they purely create and perform their own music which contains lots of elements. What they were great at doing that night was being able to create catchy melodies with a funky sound and some light rap, which made you feel good and wanting to dance.  Dishy Tangent were there to get the crowds ready for the main acts.

After the enjoyable local support musicians, Dead Reynolds‘ tour buddies Tom Lumley and his band took to the stage. Lumley is a singer/songwriter based in Cambridge. I have been listening to Lumley‘s music for quite sometime now, although this was the first time I have been to one of their shows. Including the forthcoming single “Modern Age”, the quartet played their stunning pop/pop-rock music passionately, which felt like hearing one hit song after another throughout their set. I also thought it was one of the best sing-along shows you could experience.  They definitely knew their music and how to perform it in the front of the crowds. His debut EP “Dream City” was released in 2017 and reached at No.2 in the iTunes Rock Charts. Since then, he has released three fabulous singles. Now Tom Lumley is ready to release “Modern Age” on 14th December, which is his most hard hitting rock tune so far. I am absolutely thrilled by the release.

Finally the headliner Dead Reynolds swiftly set up on stage. The band started with “Fight”, which presented their musical style and set the tone of what the band were going to give you during their 40 minute set. It was a great choice to begin the show with. They played their new single “Dust” third song from last. It was the right moment for the band to share their outstanding new single with the audience. During their set, I thought that every track they played could be released as a single. They played their well crafted songs with startling, yet delicate guitars and used perfectly timed and weighted bass and drums for heavier elements. The powerful and emotional lead vocal was complimented by the skilled and gentle backing vocals. Once you’ve seen them, you realise just how talented they are. Their show doesn’t keep you just standing still, that’s for sure. When I listened “Dust” first time a few weeks ago, I had a great feeling about this show. Well, it was even greater than I expected. I would love to see them play in a much bigger venue one day very soon, which is where Dead Reynolds belong.

Guitarist/vocalist Dominic Greenwood says of the new single “Dust”:
“Dust is about one person’s struggle with the feeling that the world is against them but knowing who they can depend on when the chips are down, having doors closed in their face and going back to the place where they feel like they belong, but still don’t really fit. Ultimately everything turns to Dust, so the song is about a journey and the feeling that we all just fly. There are references to the disbelief in religion after the loss of someone. I think this will be a firm favourite live.” 

With hints of Lonely The Brave and Deaf Havana, their brand new single “Dust” is a powerful introduction that sees the members of Dead Reynolds combine the strengths from their previous projects, delivering heartfelt and striking alt-rock. This new project brings together former members of Phoenix Calling and The First, who have previously gained support from Kerrang! Magazine, Kerrang! Radio and Rock Sound.
